The best skin care products for men need to be specialized only a little -- but a few special ingredients make a big difference in how well they work for a man. This is a guide to the special needs of a man's skin and the ingredients that work best. What is special about a man's skin? I'll mention a couple of the most obvious.
- Beards -- most men shave every day, which can be drying and irritating;
- Fat -- women, even slender women, have more natural fat under the skin. The extra fat is a major reason a woman's body is naturally softer and curvier than a man's.
So there are some genetic differences, these and others not so obvious. Nothing we can do about our genes. But the big difference is probably in behavior.
Men very often neglect their skin. They tend to do it for years, and then discover one day that skin care neglect has given them inflamed, dry, rough skin that's begun to show fine lines and wrinkles in conspicuous spots.
So a man's product has to overcome the effects of inflammation and dryness that come from all those years of doing nothing. Fortunately, there are good natural ingredients that do exactly that.
A few favorites of mine that I recommend highly in skin care products for men:
- Capuacu butter, used for thousands of years by South American tribes to protect against the sun and help heal burns. It's rich in stearic and oleic acid, both vital nutrients for the skin. It's a fine moisturizer and best of all, helps to soothe inflamed skin.
- D-Panthenol, which is vitamin B5, helps repair damaged skin tissue. It protects the skin naturally against sunburn, relieves existing sunburn, and enhances natural tanning.
- Witch hazel, used for centuries to reduce inflammation and redness in a man's skin, which made it a classic after-shave skin soother.
- And the most modern ingredient of them all, a breakthrough called Cynergy TK, which has been proven in clinical trials to reduce Prostaglandin E2 production, which is the major biochemical cause of inflammation, by 70 percent.
Cynergy TK is actually a powerful ingredient for anyone's skin. It also stimulated the skin to grow more of its own collagen and elastin, the most important skin proteins; and it increased moisture retention by 14 percent and skin elasticity by 42 percent, both in a clinical trial just 18 days long.
